Stena Line Launches the World's Largest Superferries

London, UK (PRWEB) May 14, 2010

Stena Line has announced the launch of the two largest Superferries in the world which will sail the North Sea between Harwich and Hook of Holland this year.

Stena Line's largest ever investment of over ?375 million has been spent on building the two new vessels, with the Stena Hollandica (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/routes/harwich-holland/new-superferries/ ) launching on 16 May 2010 and the Stena Britannica following in autumn 2010.

The largest ferries of their type in the world in terms of combined passenger and freight capacity: each will be capable of transporting 230 cars, 300 freight vehicles and have 1,376 beds on board. The 538 cabins, finished in a light and fresh style, will be equipped with Dux beds, wider than on standard ferries, measuring a minimum width of 900mm and up to 1600mm in 'captain's suite' rooms. All cabins will have a modern en suite bathroom with Hans Grohe fittings, and larger windows have been installed in both bathroom and main cabin areas to provide a feeling of space and light.

Customers will be able to enjoy onboard services including buffet and a la carte restaurants, cinema, bar, lounge, media room and internet corner. Customers can also stay connected throughout the journey with free wi-fi for all, mobile reception throughout the crossing and satellite television in lounges and cabins. There will be children and teenager zones, 12 kennels for dogs and a sundeck to allow passengers to relax outdoors during their journey.

Designed to have a low environmental impact, each Superferry is built in line with Stena Line's Energy Savings Programme. Eco-friendly features on the new Superferries (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/routes/harwich-holland/new-superferries/) include catalytic converters, an improved hull design, highly efficient engines and better combustion rates, all helping to reduce environmental impact. The ferries (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/routes/harwich-holland/) have facilities to recycle glass, cardboard and food waste onboard, while solar film on all windows will exclude up to 82% of the sun's radiant heat, reducing the energy used by the onboard cooling system.

Departing twice daily, the crossing takes approx 6.5 hours with a choice of day or night sailings in each direction. Departures from Harwich leave at 09:00 and around 23:45 each day, and at 14.30 and around 22:00 from the Hook of Holland (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/routes/harwich-holland/).

Lead in fares start at just ?49 one-way for a car and driver, plus ?12 per additional adult or ?6 per additional child (up to 15 yrs, under twos travel free). With a similar pricing structure to low fares airlines, as the cheaper fares sell out, the prices on popular crossings will rise, so those booking early make the largest savings. Cabins for overnight crossings start from ?18 per person one-way, based on two sharing.

Stena Line Successfully Launches Largest UK-Registered Ferry

(PRWEB) October 16, 2010

Stena Line owned Stena Britannica, the largest UK-registered ferry, has completed a successful first sailing out of British waters after its recent voyage from Harwich. The Stena Britannica, the British-flagged ferry with the largest dimensions in terms of both volume and length, left Harwich for a six-hour crossing to the Hook of Holland at 09.00 on 10th October 2010.

At just over 64.000 gross tonnage, the North Sea Superferry (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/our-ships/stena-britannica/ ) is larger than any other under the British flag, including Stena Line's own Stena Adventurer.

The Stena Britannica's maximum length is 240m which dwarves other British-registered ferries (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/ ) and is 2.4 times the height of the Big Ben clock tower.

The new Superferry (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/routes/harwich-holland/new-superferries/ ) is also colossal in terms of her car capacity, which at 230 cars is the joint highest in Europe. Her cargo deck surface area is equivalent to that of three international FIFA standard football pitches.

Built with significantly higher capacity than her predecessor, the new Stena Britannica carries 39.6% more beds (now 1,376), 36.4% more freight units (now 300), 36.2% more cabins (now 538), 35.3% more cars (now 230) and 33.3% more passengers (now 1,200) than her forerunner.

Despite her size the ferry is also currently one of the most environmentally friendly operating out of the UK, thanks to catalytic converters; improved combustion engines; recycling systems for glass, cardboard and food and radiant heat-blocking solar film windows.

Lars Olsson, Stena Line's commercial manager for travel on the North Sea, said, "Stena Line has spent three years and hundreds of millions of pounds to create the largest UK-registered ferry, and her sister vessel the Stena Hollandica, because we saw a real need for what we're calling 'the ferries of today for the passengers of the future'.

"This year so far we've seen 8% annual growth in the number of passenger sailing to Holland with us and transported 39% more coaches, so we're witnessing a revival in British interest in ferry travel (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/ ). Travellers appreciate the levels of comfort and value for money that our service offers and we need to be prepared for sustained growth and for the 2012 Olympic Games.

"The size of our Superferries will arm us for this, however we've also spared nothing on comfort, equipping both new Superferries to hotel-like levels, with free WiFi, wine bars, a la carte restaurants and Swedish-made luxury beds," Olsson added.

The giant passenger-freight ferry joins the Stena Hollandica (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/our-ships/stena-hollandica/ ) as the second of Stena Line's two newly built Superferries, which represent a combined investment of over ?375m and over three years' construction. The Stena Britannica will be christened in Harwich on Tuesday 19 October 2010 by Susan Hammond, wife of the Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP, Secretary of State for Transport.
